Campers who major in guitar at New England Music Camp participate in classes, ensembles and private lessons that enhance their classical guitar performance, both in solo and ensemble work. The comprehensive program for guitarists at NEMC includes vocal participation in either the Chorale or the Chamber Choir. A brief audition is held at the beginning of camp and placement in a choral performance group is assigned based on voice maturity and timbre.
Guitar majors can also choose to participate in the jazz program, playing in either the Jazz Ensemble or Jazz Band. Placement for the jazz groups is based on an initial audition held on the first day of camp, and is designated based on skill and performance level in the jazz medium.
A sampling of classes offered to guitarists includes:
- Guitar Ensemble – A class for intermediate to advanced guitarists performing a variety of guitar repertoire.
- Jazz Combo – Faculty coached group for jazz repertoire.
- Introduction to Jazz Improvisation – This class offers basic coaching in the technique of jazz improvisation focusing on the 12-bar blues, blues notes, and basic concepts of jazz improvisation.
